DOES VISION THERAPY WORK?

We get it. You've probably never heard of vision therapy before. How long has this been around? How do I know if I'm receiving evidence-based care?

Here are a just a few of many research endeavors which have been completed in the last several decades outlining why optometric vision therapy is a respected, highly effective method for improving eye teaming ability.

  • AMBLYOPIA (LAZY EYE)

There have been several studies that have shown the effectiveness of vision therapy in treating amblyopia, also known as "lazy eye," in children. Amblyopia is a condition in which the brain favors one eye over the other, leading to decreased vision in the weaker eye.

One study published in the journal Ophthalmology in 2002 found that vision therapy was effective in improving visual acuity in children with amblyopia. The study involved a randomized controlled trial of vision therapy in children with amblyopia and compared the results to a control group that did not receive vision therapy. The results showed that children who received vision therapy had a significant improvement in visual acuity compared to the control group.

Another study published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science in 2007 also found that vision therapy was effective in improving visual acuity in children with amblyopia. The study involved a randomized controlled trial of vision therapy in children with amblyopia and compared the results to a control group that received patching treatment (occluding the better-seeing eye). The results showed that children who received vision therapy had a greater improvement in visual acuity compared to the patching group.

These and other studies have led to a shift in the standard of care for treating amblyopia in children away from patching or occluding the better-seeing eye. While patching or occluding the better-seeing eye can be effective in improving vision in the weaker eye, it does not address the underlying cause of the amblyopia and may not lead to long-term improvement in vision. In contrast, vision therapy focuses on addressing the underlying causes of amblyopia and can lead to long-term improvement in visual acuity.

  • OCULOMOTOR DEFICIENCIES (TRACKING)

There is evidence to suggest that vision therapy can be an effective treatment for deficient saccadic eye movements and other eye movement disorders, and that it can lead to improvements in both academic and athletic performance.

Vision therapy can improve reading skills: A study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found that vision therapy was effective in improving reading skills in children with dyslexia and other reading difficulties. The study found that children who received vision therapy showed significant improvements in reading speed, reading comprehension, and overall reading accuracy compared to a control group.

Vision therapy can improve athletic performance: A review of the literature published in the Journal of Optometry found that vision therapy can improve athletic performance in individuals with visual problems such as eye tracking deficits. The review found that vision therapy can improve visual skills such as eye coordination, eye teaming, and visual reaction time, which are important for successful athletic performance.

Vision therapy can improve academic performance: A study published in the Journal of Behavioral Optometry found that vision therapy was effective in improving academic performance in children with visual processing problems. The study found that children who received vision therapy showed significant improvements in reading and math scores compared to a control group.

Overall, the evidence suggests that vision therapy can be an effective treatment for deficient saccadic eye movements and other eye movement disorders, and that it can lead to significant improvements in both academic and athletic performance.
