LASIK AND PRK
LASIK – Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis – is the most common refractive eye surgery today. As of 2019, over 20 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the United States, and over 40 million have been performed worldwide since 1991. Recovery time is typically less than two days, with many patients reporting 20/20 vision as soon as 24 hours after surgery.
PRK — Photorefractive Keratectomy — is a type of refractive surgery to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. PRK was the first type of laser eye surgery for vision correction and is the predecessor to the popular LASIK procedure. Recovery time is longer (usually 5-7 days), but results are very similar to LASIK.
Ideal LASIK/PRK candidates are patients over 21 years old with a stable glasses or contact lens prescription and excellent ocular health. The best way to find out if you’re a candidate is to have a consultation with a LASIK clinic. LASIK can be performed to correct distance vision, near vision, or monovision (one eye for distance and one eye for near). Refractive surgery does not eliminate the need for reading glasses as we age, nor does it eliminate the need for glasses or contacts if a patient’s vision changes after surgery. Ask Dr. Ryan or our staff about LASIK for more information!

CATARACT SURGERY
Over time, the lens inside the eye will slowly begin to yellow and become clouded. This usually occurs after age 50, but can sometimes happen at birth or can be caused by trauma to the eye. Cataracts cannot be corrected with glasses, but can be removed to improve clarity of vision. This procedure is called cataract surgery. When your cataracts begin to affect your vision and quality of life, our staff will work alongside your surgeon to provide pre- and post-operative care, follow-up appointments, and replacement lens recommendations that fit your needs and your lifestyle.
