The Lumen Story
Let’s go back to 2004…
Ryan Capouch was in middle school, and woke up one September morning without any vision in his right eye. His local optometrist, Dr. Michael Rexine, met him after hours and diagnosed him with optic neuritis. Over the next two days, Ryan lost vision in his left eye as well, and was rendered legally blind. He spent a week in Fargo’s MeritCare (now Sanford) hospital, under the care of ophthalmologists Dr. Tom Strinden and Dr. Steve Thom, and pediatrician Dr. Patrick Welle. Through their expertise, Ryan made a full recovery and now enjoys healthy vision. It was because of the care and attention of Dr. Rexine, Dr. Strinden, Dr. Thom, and Dr. Welle, that Ryan found his calling to be a pediatric optometrist.
Dr. Ryan’s Education
After finishing high school, Ryan attended the University of Mary in Bismarck and spent his summers working for Dr. Rexine in Mayville as an optometric technician. He then went to the Arizona College of Optometry in Glendale, where he received additional training in pediatric optometry and vision therapy. His externships included working at three pediatric optometry and vision therapy clinics in Chicago, IL, Nashville, TN, and Fort Collins, CO. Under the tutelage of Dr. Robb Johnson at Brighter Future Vision Clinic, Ryan learned an incredibly unique approach to vision therapy that is effective, efficient, and engaging. Upon graduation from optometry school, Dr. Ryan and his wife Maggie moved to Fargo.
The Inception of Lumen Vision
Dr. Ryan spent two years working with Dr. Rexine and his amazing team at Eyes on Broadway. He served hundreds of patients in his vision therapy program. With gratitude to all of the doctors, mentors, patients, and friends who helped along the way, Lumen Vision was born. “Lumen” is Latin for “light”, and is a measure of brightness. Our mission is to help children and their families build a brighter future through comprehensive eye care and optometric vision therapy. We can’t wait for you to join our story!
